It should be fresh, well-groomed and healthy - attractive men's skin. But you don't need a closet full of expensive care products. Here you can find out what men's skin in general and your skin type in particular needs in order to look well rested, young and attractive.
Are men's and women's skin really different?
The fact that there are care products for women and men is not just marketing. "There are significant differences between men's and women's skin that can be traced back to the different hormone levels. The sex hormone testosterone is responsible for the fact that men have 20 percent thicker skin," explains the dermatologist Dr. Susanne Steinkraus from Hamburg. At the same time, men's skin has a higher permeability in the protective barrier, which makes it more vulnerable.
Good news: skin aging is slower in men. The reason why women's skin ages faster is the falling estrogen level. As a result, water storage capacity and sebum production decrease, and wrinkles become visible more quickly. Men have no problem with that.
"Another difference is the production of sebum," explains Steinkraus: "Due to the large number of sebum glands, men's skin produces around twice as much sebum every day as women's skin, which has far fewer sebum glands." This often makes the skin appear larger-pored and greasy and is also the reason why men more often have to deal with impurities.
How Much Facial Care Do I Need?
For Dr. Pia Paes, doctor at the Dermatologikum in Hamburg, two steps are particularly important: cleansing and facial toner. You should cleanse the skin thoroughly, but gently, every evening. In the morning, it is sufficient to rinse your face with warm water, unless you have particularly oily skin. This is good to be cleaned accordingly in the morning. Then our expert recommends using a pH value balancing facial toner.
After this preparatory work, a cream, fluid or gel can also be used to support the skin barrier in its own regeneration and stabilization. Which care is suitable for this depends on your respective skin type, as this should be adapted to the fat and moisture content of the skin.
Expert tip for pure skin: Make these two steps into your routine, like brushing your teeth or those fresh socks!
Don't forget sun protection
In addition, you should always wear sunscreen when your skin is exposed to the sun. UV rays not only make the skin age faster, they also increase the risk of skin cancer.
Tip for skin problems: Be sure to consult a dermatologist. They can advise you optimally and help you choose the right products.
Characteristics of normal skin: You hardly have to deal with problems. Your skin is easy to care for and uncomplicated. Nevertheless, normal skin should not be neglected in the care. Cleanse your skin regularly and use facial toner.
Characteristics of dry skin: Dry skin lacks moisture. Usually it is very delicate, sensitive and tends to redden during the day. The lack of moisture can lead to a feeling of tension, itching or flaky spots.
Characteristics of oily skin: A high production of sebum makes the skin shine during the day. The complexion is rather coarse-pored and prone to blackheads or pimples.
Characteristics of combination skin: In the T-region that extends over the forehead, nose and chin, the skin is oily and shiny. The region around the eyes and cheeks, on the other hand, is rather dry.
What helps against typical skin problems in men?
With or without care, sometimes the skin is crazy. Men often have to struggle with impurities due to the high sebum production. Too dry, too greasy, or redness that won't go away. It sucks. That can now be an end. With these tips you can prevent or, in acute cases, support your skin.
Dry skin: Cold and dry heating air puts the skin to a special test, especially in winter. It is not uncommon for dry skin to become a problem in winter.
Expert tip against dry skin: The skin should be supplied with good fats with rich creams. Skin-identical or skin-like ingredients such as ceramides and cholesterol are particularly suitable,
